Rise Like Lions

Sussex composer and part-time poet, Paul G Terry explains why he supports our project, rating Shelley as one of his biggest influences.

I am the leader and resident composer for the Sussex-based musical group the “Freedom Ensemble”. Ever since a teenager I was turned on to poetry through Shelley’s works, and also from reading about his life. He was the original rebel, fighting for what he knew best! I still read his poems, and I still write my own poems. On my latest album I’ve composed a track inspired by him. This track was ready to be written down, when I arose from slumber!

Our latest album, “The Sussex Suite” has the new rambunctious track named “Rise like Lions”, of course referring to the famous line from Shelley’s “Mask of Anarchy”:

“Rise like Lions after slumber
In unvanquishable number,
Shake your chains to earth like dew
Which in sleep had fallen on you -
Ye are many - they are few.”
